ACCI delegation comprising Alhaj Mohammad Yonass Mohmand, Commercial Vice-Chairman of ACCI & SAARC CCI Vice-President (Afghanistan), Mr. Mujahidullah Safi, SAARC CCI Executive Committee member (Afghanistan) and Mohammad Zia Aziz, International Organization Manager at ACCI attended the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI) presidential Change of Office Ceremony and the 65th Executive Committee Meeting held on 14th -15th March 2016 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The SAARC CCI presidential Change of Office Ceremony under the theme “Unleashing South Asia” was attended by Rt. Hon’ble Mr. K. P. Sharma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal, Hon’ble Mr. Kamal Thapa, Deputy Prime and Foreign Affairs Minister of Nepal, SAARC CCI Secretary General, President, Senior Vice-President, Vice-Presidents, EC and GA members of SAARC CCI and other private sector representatives from the South Asian countries.
Rt. Hon’ble K.P. Sharma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal met the president, Secretary General and Vice-presidents of SAARC CCI prior to the Ceremony on 14th March 2016 where Mr. Mohmand, SAARC CCI Vice-President (Afghanistan) emphasized on the regional connectivity of the SAARC Region and the role of Afghanistan in connecting the SAARC region to the central Asia and beyond. Mr. Mohmand added that SAARC Region can be the biggest market place for the South Asian Countries by having the 1/4th population of the world. He also stated that if we (the SAARC Countries) do not do the trade among ourselves then we can’t do it with other parts of the world.
The Ceremony was then officially begun by the national anthem of Nepal. Hon’ble Mr. Kamal Thapa, Deputy Prime and Foreign Affairs Minister of Nepal handover the Pin to all Vice President of SAARC CCI from the South Asian Countries and congratulate them for assuming the post. That way Mr. Mohmand has been appointed as the Vice-President SAARC CCI from Afghanistan for the second term (2015-2016).
Mr. Suraj vaidya, the newly elected president of SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI) said that the newly elected committee of SAARC CCI would work closely with SAARC member states to create investment friendly climate in the region. He also said that the EC, during its two-year term, would also work to expand youth entrepreneurship in the region, promote gender equality and give due recognition to women entrepreneurs.
KP Sharma Oli, Prime Minster of Nepal started off his speech by handing over the Pin to Mr. Suraj Vaidya congratulating him on his new tenure as president of SAARC CCI. While addressing the programme, He added that the change of guard in the SAARC CCI has significant importance as the SAARC foreign minister-level meeting is being held in Nepal on Thursday. He invited the president of SAARC CCI to make a 15 Minutes presentation on private sector of the South Asian countries during the Minister-level meeting.
Deputy Prime & Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Kamal Thapa said South Asia is the least connected region in the world and there is need to work for eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers. “I will raise the issue in the upcoming foreign minister-level meeting,” he said.
The ceremony was then ended by presenting the token of Love from the Afghanistan private sector to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Nepal by Mr. Mohmand, SAARC CCI Vice-President.
The second day of the program started by the breakfast meeting of the presidium ( SAARC CCI president, Senior Vice-President, Vice Presidents and Secretary General) where all the participants reviewed all activities of SAARC CCI and plan for the events to take place in 2016 under the umbrella of SAARC Chamber. The breakfast meeting was then followed by the 65th Executive committee meeting of SAARC CCI. The participants of the executive committee meeting of SAARC CCI were then gone through the following agenda items:
- Reviewed and Approved the agenda of the 65th EC meeting
- Reviewed and Approved the minutes of the 64th EC meeting
- Introduction of Office bearers and members nominated for the term 2016-17
- Reactivation of the council
- Reviewed and approved the SAARC TPN integration with SAARC CCI
- Approved the audit report of accounts
- Discussed on SAARC life/patron membership
SAARC CCI also proposed to establish three branch offices in Mumbai (India), Colombo (Sri Lanka), and Dhaka (Bangladesh) to expedite the SAARC CCI activities in the region. Among the agenda Items it is approved that SAARC CCI delegation will be travel to Afghanistan on 13th-14th April 2016 to attend the meeting with president and office bearers of ACCI and have a call on to H.E. President of Afghanistan besides attending the 10th SAFTA Committee of Expert meeting and 9th Ministerial Round in Afghanistan.
ACCI also proposed SAARC CCI to form a financial committee comprising members from all eight SAARC countries in order to ensure the transparency of SAARC CCI accounts.
